Homeopathy: From Hahnemann To Nanotechnology

79

By Shalini Kagal

Over 200 years ago, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann presented to the world a new way to heal disease – homeopathy. The term means ‘similar suffering’ and Dr. Hahnemann used the principle of ‘like curing like’ in order to treat any form of ill health. Very much what vaccines do except that vaccines act as prophylactics while homeopathy acts as a curative.

Homeopathy, like most alternative treatments, has never really been mainstream but in its own, quiet, behind-the-scenes way, it has grown and spread all over the world. Some have absolute faith in these little white pills, some brush the whole thing aside like a joke and some will only acknowledge that it works – but like a placebo.

Then came the British Medical Association rubbishing it and questioning its efficacy. The British Parliament echoed its views and dismissed these pills as being totally ineffective. Unfortunately, no homeopath could quite explain to any scientist’s satisfaction just why homeopathy worked. How could something so diluted carry anything at all of the original medication? Now comes proof from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. Chemical engineering students from this prestigious Institute went out and bought a few homeopathic remedies from the stores. Then they dissolved them and diluted them even more and they checked this very diluted solution with powerful instruments. When it was seen under an extremely powerful electron microscope …..Eureka! They found particles of the original in it. The solutions used were 1 part in 10 raised to 400 parts and even then, the original particles were clearly present. The paper outlining these findings has been published in the latest issue of the journal ‘Homeopathy’, published by Elsevier, the premier medical publishing company.

In the normal course of things, if you were to empty a cup of milk into a lake, there could be no traces of the milk once it got diluted. However, metals are different and they are seen to retain their properties even through extreme dilutions. Why or how this is so is still a matter of conjecture and a lot more research will have to be done before we know that for sure. One theory is that nanobubbles form in the solution and come to the surface and these nanoparticles help the solution retain the properties of the original. In homeopathy it is believed that the greater the dilution, the greater the potency. Could it be that with each dilution, the nanoparticles just get more potent and therefore more effective? Questions, questions.

So often, the truth lies before us or is revealed to us but we don’t want to accept it simply because we can’t see the road that leads to it.

My s/o's late Dad was not into alternative medicine, but my s/o says he went to a Naturapath, I guess at the suggestion of his wife, and was prescribed a homeopathy remedy for his high blood pressure, and it worked in normalizing it. This experience impressed my s/o and its a reason why he became interested in natural healing. Its interesting that someone who really didn't believe in these remedies saw results, so much for the placebo effect. Thanks for writing this hub; it was informative!

Shalini you raise a very interesting concept that the smaller you can make something the more potent it becomes.

Nice Hub :-)

Bravo, Shalini, so glad scientists finally found visible nanoparticles in homeopathics.

Just yesterday one my client told me that homeopathics completely healed her HPV she had for 15 years (there is no HPV any any more) and in addition, her herpes is healed as well.

Thank you so much for this Hub.

Conventional doctors may think Homeopathy is rubbish however the recipients of homeopathic patients know homeopathic remedies work very effectively. Homeopathic doctors have the real cure to illnesses. They cause your body heal itself from within with it a cure, how wonderful!

Homeopathy is no less science than big-pharma's tendency to manipulate it's scientific reletivity and healing promise of product, thanks for sharing,Shalini.;)

Homeopathy sometimes works... case by case. A missed point is the element of "intent." If one stares at water for example and creates an imagery of something and then freezes.. and repeats with a different "image," the ice crystals are different... It has been observed and repeated in clinical trials where a "healing" intent imagery is impressed on a glass of water and in double blind test, the patients reacts in positive manner...

Lynne McTaggart is an investigative researcher. She has written books about her efforts to verify Homeopathy...

I never understood homeopathy, but now I am beginning to. I too am in favor of holistic healing and I also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself.

Thanks Shal. :)

Thank you all for reading - this is something so dear to me!

Hi Marie - yes, if only people would try it before they dismissed it!

ag - sounds weird, doesn't it? and yet.....

Tatjana - that's wonderful about your friend!

Hi Vladmir - like you, I believe that underlying it all is the God particle :)

Hi dali48 - thanks for inspiring my next hub - it's going to be about preventives - the 'flu included :)

Craan - yes, I think it's wonderful too!

De Greek - welcome back - er....don't go overboard, OK? :D

MA - yes - I only wish it were accorded the 'scientific status'!

dallas 93444 - yes, case by case because it treats the individual, not the malady as you've so rightly put it. I haven't read Lynne McTaggart - I will now.

quicksand - hello my friend - yes, it does!

Great article Shalini - I've been a "believer" all my life as my Dad introduced the family to homeopathy when everyone else still thought it was hocus-pokus!

The rhythm of your words

Reads like a poem.

Reaching our ears like music.

Touching our hearts with truth.

Expanding our vision,

Like the blue sea and sky.

Unlimited in its beauty.

Thanks of for that. Well if you think about it, the universe was supposed to be a very small dense particle with tremendous potential, which was all released with the big bang. So it makes sense that these very small nano particles have a tremendous potential and maintain all their original traits in spite of infinite dilution.

Hi Green Lotus - how nice to see you here. Yes, I know your leanings to all things natural - and what a co-incidence - my Dad introduced homeopathy to us too!

Hi dali48 - thank you - the hub's almost done :)

Hello, hello - so glad to hear that - it's amazing what it can do, right?

Hi Debby - thank you - I'm touched!

Hi K - potential in infinite dilution? Sounds potent - thanks as always for reading!

Hi Dr. Rao - thanks!

What a wonderful historical tour of homeopathy your Hub inspired, Shalini, a tour that led me right into my own backyard, Philadelphia, and the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania which eventually morphed into today's Hahnemann University Hospital. Thanks for the inspiration to re-learn some things I'd known but had forgotten. Perhaps I need a homeopathic remedy to help with the holes in my brain!

Reading your article prompted another excursion, this time into my own past. My mother is a firm believer in children eating dirt. Doing so, she claims, gives them little doses of germs that all through life help them fight off bigger doses. Not exactly the homeopathic philosophy, as you mentioned in your discussion of prophylaxis vs cure, but another journey I took today inspired by you. Thanks!

Hi, I think the whole thing is fascinating, I discovered herbs a few years ago and of course the Doctors didn't like that either, but if you look at medicine it always has those natural ingredients in them anyway, I believe that homeopathy is probably the most natural and true way of healing people, great hub rated up, cheers nell

Hi Sally's Trove - must be a wonderful hospital! That's such good advice - your mother's! So many of our children are brought up in such sterile conditions, it's little wonder their immunity is so low!

Hi Nell - how true. If only more people believed!

I believe these are simply theories. Thinkers can continue to contemplate. Homeopaths heal and do their work based upon the observations of the actions of the remedies and the responses of the living organisms. That's really what counts. Thumbs Up!

Very interesting and informative. I like homeopathy and have had some good results from being treated by a homeopath. I think one of the great things about most homeopaths is that they look holisitically at the person, not just at the symptom. There are some allopaths who also do this, but they are rare.

Thanks again for the great Hub.

Love and peace

Tony

How true Debby - it works and finally, that's what counts!

Hi Tony - yes, there are some who accept other forms of healing - if only there could be a coming together of various systems for various ailments.

A lot of patients like to try 'alternative' medicine _ I think there is room for any medicien that will work and evidence base doesnt always withstand the rigor of academic snobbery. However one has to be careful in completely abandoning traditional medicine but instead there should be 'one medicine' anything that listens attentively, diagnoses carefully, manages holistically. I don't care if my sources come from homeopathy, Ayurveda, or Allopathy. I want to make the best for my patient.

Thanks for a fascinating hub!

Hi Docmo - I do believe that all streams should work alongside and not against each other. Unfortunately, many view any stream except the one they like as dangerous or ineffective. I feel everything has its place in the scheme of things :)

Thanks for coming by and reading!
