It’s going to be a stand off this Valentine’s Day and it’s been a long time coming. For some years now, one group in India has tried its level best to impose its Taliban-esque set of morals on another. With the might of numbers and a callous contempt for law and liberty, they have bullied, harassed and played the role of wet blanket every year without fail. Their reason? Valentine’s Day is a western concept and so out of place in our society!! This in the land that gave the world the Kama Sutra! All it did of course was to push the youngsters into celebrating away from the crowds or behind closed doors. Till now – when there’s a cry that is echoing all over the land saying ‘Enough!’
The trouble began in a town on the western coast where a few youngsters had gathered together in a pub. The moral police, as they called themselves, descended and with scant regard for chivalry – which is a stranger to their mental make-up, they broke the party up – with sticks and stones and fists. All because they believe they are the guardians of the country’s morality – which translated, means women should not drink or smoke or wear provocative clothing – just sit at home and get beaten up! In times past, parents would have told their youngsters to lie low for a while before they thronged the pubs once more. Today, it’s a different story. Enter the Indian CyberWoman – she might not be able to take on these goons physically but she more than makes up for it with her cyber prowess!
Last week a new group made its appearance on Facebook called the Consortium of Pub-going Loose and Forward Women with an in-you-face, let’s-see-what-you-goons-do-now attitude. The number of members is growing like crazy thanks to a concerted effort by not just girls and women but men too – and the members are from all over the world. (BBC news report). And the revenge they’ve planned is soooo sweet - and pink! On Valentine’s Day, the head honcho of the self-styled moral police has a lot of gifts from all over the country coming to him – his address has been splashed all over the Internet as well as the newspapers - and most of them will be ‘pink chaddis’ or pink underwear. Collection centres have been set up all across the country.
The Revenge of the Pink Panties has been splattered all over the media and one wonders if sniggers can do what force and the law cannot – shame or embarrass the louts into keeping their nose out of things that do not concern them. There’s been a clarion call to all women on Valentine’s Day – Go out to the pubs and drink to a new goon-less age in India.

Actually, just read the BBC link, and my 'take' on it, is that the ringleader has seriously 'shot himself in the foot' as now, due to his behaviour (and his followers actions), everyone, including Indian men, (and men and women from all cultures), are pulling together against his ridiculous beliefs and ideals. This may well bring on progress and freedom for many women I hope :)

Isn't it odd that sometimes pink stands for feminism and sometimes it stands for anti-feminism? It's the same with make-up. If you come from a very traditional background, then painting your face means acting like a woman of low virtue. But if you come from a middle of the road background, then not painting your face means you are some kind of ultra-feminist who thinks women should never be sex objects.
I don't wear make-up, and this has been interpreted both ways, by different people. Actually it's neither.
It's hard to strike a balance.
True Aya - I guess the context in which colours are used is what can change a traditional perception.
I'm terrible where make up is concerned too - not because I have anything against it - simply because I so often forget! And feel awfully underdressed without it at certain social events that we're obliged to attend! :D
Shalini- Another fantastic hub. This time I was in India during the valentine and although no such "moral policing" happened in hyderabad but still I feel frustrated when some nut cases suddenly get weird notions of protecting our "culture". I personally think since that state is ruled by a right winged party it could have more to do with a political goal rather than "social/moral" goals. Thumbs up for highlighting this.
Thank you CW - Hyderabad had its share of forcible marriages and greeting card shops shut down too - probably not where you were! It really has got to stop so our youngsters break free of this goondaraj tactics!
