My Puffs Of Oxygen For The Day
68When you’re drowning in a sea of work and you need to come up for air, what better way when you’re stuck in front of the computer than to steer towards green corners of the virtual world that revive you? This is very often even better than that tea break or coffee break or cigarette break. For one thing, you don’t need to get up and go anywhere – all you need to do is click on your URL of choice and get your fix to keep you going for the next couple of hours.
Every one has his own list of where to go for his oxygen puffs – as long as it revives and relaxes you, that’s your special oxygen puff. I’ve got a couple of places I go to and before I enter those wonderful places, I give myself a time limit – ten minutes – not a second more.
HubPages is a recent discovery and there’s a lot of oxygen inhaling I do here. Of course, if I let myself go, I could spend hours reading all those fascinating hubs. It’s like a voyage of discovery – hidden in a whole lot of mediocre attempts at writing, you suddenly come across a nugget – and you want to pan that writer’s work to see if there are more. When that particular writer has 200 or maybe more hubs, you know you just can’t yield to temptation or you’ll have a very irate client grumbling about missed deadlines. So I discipline myself to just a few of those pleasures and go back to my work. Only to come back when my head is reeling with SEO, Copyscape, DupeCop or whatever else so I can recharge my batteries.
Another watering hole I go to for my oxygen fixes is Digitalpoint – sure I go there to keep track of what is going on in the world of the Internet – and try my level best to figure out the whys and the wherefores. However, I also go to their general section and it’s amazing what you can find sometimes. Members reminiscing about pets, family members, views about politics, religion and what have you. When there’s an atmosphere of strife, I quietly retire to come back another time. At other times, I poke around and spend a few moments discovering something funny, something thought-provoking or something touching. Life’s too short to manage short fuses.
The other oxygen supply I rely on is poetry. While I have a well-thumbed Palgrave’s Golden Treasury beside my bed, when I’m online, I usually go to the poetry blogs I’ve bookmarked. Here are a couple of them. Sometimes, I might come across a poet I like and I bookmark the site to return to later on one of my oxygen-seeking breaks.

I know my puffs of oxygen are not what everyone else would think fun or relaxing or reviving. Each has his own oxygen. For some it could be an exercise break, for some it could be an online game break. Whatever it is, as long as it gets you back feeling good, then it’s done what it was supposed to do. Of course, sometimes, I forget that a break means just a few puffs – then I’m tripping the rest of the day!

i still like a quick game of hangman!!
You said it Shalini! It certainly IS a voyage of discovery. Breathtaking indeed! Thanks to the brilliance of many of our fellow hubbers. (including you)
Talking about a "breathtaking" voyage through the valley of many a fascinating hub page, one has to "breathe" in some exhaust fumes too! Comforting is the fact that only 20% of what we inhale is oxygen. I am grateful for that 20%!
Congratulations on another brilliant essay! :)
I guess "exhaust fumes" was not the exact term I meant to use ... :)
Whew! :) I knew you did!
Very interesting
I listen to some soothing music online and it helps me relax at office. Besides that taking a small walk outside office and splashing some water on my face also helps.
Ah...Hubpages is my oxygen break these days. I've recently discovered it, and well what can I say...so many hubs so little time! :)
I like the term "oxygen puff"! I think I'm going to use that more often :)
Great hub, Shalini. Music helps me, or a quick walk outside to take a few, deep breaths and soak up some sunlight. I also keep a book of Sudoku puzzles by my desk. :) One of my dad's favorite expressions is "don't sweat the small stuff" and that's a mantra I sometimes need to repeat to myself when I forget how small and insignificant 99% of all work-related issues are.
Thank you, Shalini! What a nice thing to say! :)
This oxygen puff is much better than Cigaratte puff. Be the same. Cheers, :)
I also write poetry and other stuff, you can check out here http://allarequal.blogspot.com
Thanks for the reminder that our brains and our spirits need oxygen puffs as much as our lungs do! Love the term and the concept. When you work online, it's easy to take little virtual vacations (like your beach picture). But I wouldn't have thought of that... so thank you for the idea, Shalini! MM
Amen. And there are many, many oxygen-givers here on HubPages. What an inspiring and nurturing space this is!
I enjoyed reading and could relate very well. Thanks and thumbs up.
My oxygen puff is Hubpages, I can come here when I need a laugh or need help with a problem or just some advice. This is a great place with so many great, funny, and talened people. I am glad I came upon it.
My oxygen puffs of late have been HubPages, but I like poetry too, particularly short, poignant verses which give you a sense of meaning that would be lost in a thousand word essay. Sometimes the more we say, the less we express.
Classical music for me is my breath of fresh air!
Ironically, right now I'm taking my puff of oxygen.
Thanks! We really need to breathe more.
I seem to be following RGraf around the HubPages today. Glad for the reminder to come back for my oxygen fix! Hello Shalini. This is a truly inspirational hub from an inspirational hubber.
Namaste. MM
Amazing what a little escape can do to clear the mind. Thanks for the read.
Just stopping in to say hello Ms. Shalini. It's been a beautiful clear day here and I got a full dose of oxygen. I just love the title of your hub and the opportunity to follow other hubbers here (like my new friend Goldentoad) for a brief "fix." Ahhhhh. Pure and refreshing!
