WordPress - Step By Step
So you’ve got your domain name, and presumably your hosting
too. Your hosting company’s welcome mail will contain a URL for your ‘cpanel’
(this is the panel that controls your website) as well as a username and a
password.
Log in and on the Main Menu, go down to the
Software/Services section and click on Fantastico Deluxe.
There, you’ll find a section titled ‘Blogs’ on the left.
Click on the ‘WordPress’ option. Follow the instructions and your WordPress is
installed! Do remember to send an email to yourself with your username and
password – which you will need to log into your blog.
Then go back to the Main Menu, get into File Manager, click
on your domain name, go to wp-content and then click on wp-themes. Upload the
zipped up files of a couple of WordPress themes (you get a choice of free ones
at wordpress.org), select and ‘extract’.
Log out, type in your domain name followed by ‘/wp-admin’
and log in. Go to Design and click on the themes, activate the one you like.
Happy Blogging!

nice article
wow i have never seen it made so simple!! great work
pgrundy: You're welcome - do hope it helps. I love WordPress and all you can do with it - hope you find it as enjoyable as I do!
Lgali: Thanks for your comment!
cflynn: Learnt the hard way - time was when it took me so long to do it - till a couple of youngsters showed me the easy way. Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks Shalini! This will come in handy for me. Very straightforward!
Thanks Christoph - hope it helps!
Well, I'm stuck at extracting the themes. The 'extract' button is grayed out.
So close and yet so far! lol!
Any thoughts on what I might have done wrong?
Hi Pam - here's what could have happened - there could be a folder within a folder! So unzip it on your computer, make sure it's just one folder and not a folder within a folder - LOL - and then zip it up again and try uploading it. Here's to it working this time around :)
I'm afraid I've hopelessly boogered it up somehow. (If anyone could do it, I could!) My sister-in-law is having us over Sunday for Bill's mom's birthday, maybe I can persuade her to take a look. She works for a software company so she's pretty web savvy. If she can't fix it she probably can persuade on of the computergeeks in her office to do it. <sigh>
I need to take a class or something. I've had this domain name since July and I feel mentally impaired, that's how badly its going. I know I'm not unusual either. I wonder how many of these domains they sell to people who never do figure it out? I'm guessing a lot. I know some other people here at HubPages who bought them and are just as stuck.
I refuse to be sunk though. I WILL get this. I will! lol!
You know, this would be a good part-time job for someone who 'gets' it. I bet a person could work pretty steady just setting things up for dumb older folks!
Hi Pam,
It's only the first time that's tough - once you get it right, it's a breeze - so do you want to try from where you left off?
Go to cpanel, key in your username and password, click on File Manager.
Click on public_html on the left sidebar, then on wp-content, then double-click on ‘themes’ – on the word, not the folder.
You’ll see the ‘classic’ as well as the zipped up folders which you've uploaded on the right. Click on one zipped up folder and then hit delete – do the same with the others (just the ones you’ve uploaded). Now click on upload and upload the folders once more. Click on the zipped up file, and click Extract. Once it’s been extracted, click on ‘Close’. Do the same with the others ad then go into your blog and choose the design you want.
You can start writing right away even if you haven’t uploaded anything because the default classic comes with the WordPress installation. The great thing about it is that even after you’ve written a whole lot of posts, you can change the design and all the posts automatically get transferred to the new template.
wow, great writting!
Thanks sherlynavia!
I use Blogger mainly, but I would love to try the WordPress sometimes.
Hi cgull - blogger is great for a free blog - so is wordpress - however, this hub tells you how to upload a wordpress blog to your paid domain and hosting :)
I too am a blogger guy and will be going down the wordpress road real soon! ;)
Hi compu-smart - I'm sure you'll love it!
Hi Shalini,
I do love it but will love even more when i have!D
That's simple! thank you.
compu-smart: would love to hear how you like it!
RGraf: Thanks - hope it helps :)
I've been thinking about using wordpress to complement my website, and now, based on this hub, I think I'll go ahead. Thanks!
I do hope you have fun with it - it's really great!
Thanks for bringing this to the fore. English blogs will certainly benefit. Bloggers speaking other languages better stick with the manual installation, though. :)
Love your poems on your personal blog!
Thanks for reading Haunty - hope it was useful! And thanks for reading my personal blog - which is hopelessly outdated - I must do something about it!
Thanks Shalini. This was short and simple. I just followed all the steps and was able to install a wordpress theme. Now I am confused with posting. I just posted a new page and had a look at my website. It still looks the same ! Where is the new uploaded theme gone? Please guide.
Hi guidebaba - I'm so glad you could do it! Maybe what you need to do is to log in, go to Design or Themes and then activate the one you want. Once you do this, it will automatically show on the site. No need to redo the post - the post shows with the new theme. Happy blogging :)
I have activated the new theme. But what I am wondering with is that I already have a website with over 130 pages. What is going to happen to these 130+ Pages? This looks too confusing. I recently registered a Brand new website and am on the way to add contents to it. This time I am using the CSS Style. I was just wondering to do it on Wordpress but I guess with wordpress I don't get the freedom to place my ads as and where I wish. Is this true? I am from Calcutta. Where are you from? Have my Visa Interview tommorow at the American Counsulate. Wish me good luck.
Hi guidebaba - WP has both posts and pages - however, before you shift all those pages, maybe you should get familiar with it.
I'm in Pune - wish you all the best for your visa :)
Thanks Shalini. I think i am OK with the website that I create in Frontpage Express. I have lost interest in WP. Pune is a good and fast developing city and we also have our office in Pune. Some of of our big customers like Tata Motors and minda Group are in Pune. The arrogant American Denied me the Visa because I am still not married. Maybe next time.
Hi guidebaba - once you get used to it, you'll find WP so much better than the regular websites :)
Better luck next time!
Thnx Shalini, i will try to use WP for my next blog..
Hi swaradila - I do hope you like it!
I have been thinking of moving my WP blogover to my domain. I used FrontPage to create my main site. I'm just wondering how I import all the many WP blogs I've already posted on the free WP site to be part of my domain. I've got lots of space, but I suppose WP blogs would be in a different folder than my Frontpage Web. If you host the WP blogs yourself, do they still have all the same features you have on the WP site such a extracts, key words categories, widgets, the works. Is this writtrn in a book anywhere? My typing and my dropping eyelids are telling em to stop writing now and go to sleep
Hi WannaB Writer - the easiest way would be to create subdomains for all your blogs and redo them in your own site. If your domain is abc.com and you have three blogs named xyz, mno and pqr, you could have them in your domain as abc.com/xyz, abc.com/mno and abc.com/xyz. So you won't need to pay for new domain names - just add the WordPress, name it and you're ready to go!
What a simple and great noting it is! We hope much more such technical tips of success. Generally such practical tips are not available in books.
Thanks for reading, neysajasper.
I am still struggling with Wordpress. For now i have some deadline with other writing sites. In April i would get a few domains for Blogs. This article would definitely be helpful to me. Keep up the good work!
Hi Anamika - it's so easy once you learn your way around. I love the way it works - I'm sure you will too! Any help you need, do mail me :)
I just found this hub Shalini as I have been struggling with my Wordpress Classic site for some time now. If only Wordpress were as easy as HP! I am finding that I need to know html to change colors and fonts within the layout (especially the side bar) which is very frustrating. Any advice? Thanks!
Hi Green Lotus - perhaps the simplest way is to download a free wordpress template - it does take a long time in the beginning to change colours and fonts.
G'day Shalini I have this Hub bookmarked but just realised that I did not acknowledge that this is a great Hub.
Thanks very much for the information and it gets a Thumbs up from me :-)
ag - thank you so much for coming back and leaving a comment - I do appreciate it :)

Thank you Shalini! That's pretty straightforward. I'll let you know how it comes out. Thank you so much for answering my request!
